Why Central High is a historic site
Central High became a landmark in the struggle over school desegregation, and the site interprets the events surrounding the Little Rock Nine. The school remains an operating public high school serving grades 9–12, so this is both a historic place and an active school campus.
The National Park Service also identifies the Daisy and L.C. Bates home, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and the Testament statues on the Arkansas State Capitol grounds as Little Rock places connected to the Central High story. The Capitol grounds can fit naturally into a wider history itinerary, including a visit to the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock.

Visitor center and exhibits
The visitor center introduces the history through interviews, news footage, and audio and video recordings from people directly involved in the events interpreted at the site. It also has a bookstore and accessible restrooms.
Give yourself time to take in the recorded accounts before walking around the school grounds. The visitor center, Commemorative Garden and front grounds of the school are accessible. You can request a wheelchair at the visitor center information desk; exhibit audio description, assistive listening and handheld captions are also available.

Tours, hours and access
Admission to the visitor center, park grounds and ranger-led programs is free, with no entrance fee or pass required. Check the official site before you go for current hours and access guidance.
Opening hours
- Tuesday to Saturday: 10 AM–4 PM
- Monday and Sunday: closed
Last checked November 2026. Hours can change on holidays and for special events.
Ranger-led programs are guided walking interpretive activities, typically offered Tuesday through Saturday at 1:00 p.m. CST/CDT. You need a confirmed reservation at least 48 hours in advance; programs are limited to 50 participants unless the park arranges otherwise. These walks do not include entry inside Central High School.
The Commemorative Garden is open daily from 7:00 a.m. CST/CDT until sunset. Visitors can also walk around the school’s front steps and reflecting pool.
The Commemorative Garden and Elizabeth Eckford Commemorative Bench are among the outdoor public areas. The school and the Magnolia Mobil Service Station are closed to the public, and the school’s main entrance is not accessible to visitors.

Respectful conduct at an active school
Use the sidewalks around the school and on its grounds, and stay off grass and landscaped areas. Keeping to public paths helps protect the grounds and respects the school’s daily use by students and staff.
Plan your visit around the public areas rather than expecting to enter the school or the Magnolia Mobil Service Station. The visitor center, garden and school’s front grounds are accessible, but the school’s main entrance is not open to visitors.
Getting there and planning time
From El Rancho, a motel in Little Rock, the site is about 5.2 miles away. For the drive to the visitor center, the National Park Service directs drivers to take Interstate 630 exit 2B for Martin Luther King Jr.
Boulevard, then turn west onto Daisy L. Gatson Bates Drive. Park in the free visitor center lot; it has accessible spaces. Bus and RV spaces measure 14 feet wide by 40 feet long.
Parking can be congested on school days from 8:30–9:00 a.m. and 3:30–4:00 p.m.
The National Park Service suggests allowing a half day, which gives you time for the visitor center and outdoor grounds. A one-day Little Rock route for history and riverfront stops can help you place the visit alongside other city stops.
For a simple sequence, start at the visitor center, then walk the public grounds and garden. If you have reserved a ranger-led program, check its timing against the visitor center’s opening hours.
